The Friendliest Small Town title only adds to Murray’s accolades as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People and a Playful City USA recipient. Not only is this a prime location for young people as the home of Murray State University, it’s also certified as a retirement community and an ideal location for all ages with such friendly residents.

Murray State is a prime attraction in this small town. A public university with over 10,000 students, its presence provides athletics, art and entertainment for the entire community. The campus hosts The Clara M. Eagle Gallery, which features everything from photography and new media to woodwork, ironwork, sculpture and student art, and the Wrather West Kentucky Museum, which exhibits the regions history and development.

Visitors should not miss local landmarks like Murray Court Square and Central Park or area lakes and outdoor recreation. Central Park boasts a disc golf course, dog park, and theater classes, performances and youth programs through Playhouse in the Park. Kentucky and Barkley Lakes, connected by a canal, offer recreation, camping and attractions. From go-karts to water parks or fishing and hunting, the area offers something for everyone in a beautiful natural setting.

Hosting several seasonal festivals each year, Murray is best known for its annual Freedom Fest celebration, which includes street fairs, cookouts, concerts and a parade amongst the four days of events. People come from all over to join in the family fun, run the 5K, and view the fireworks finale.

Great place to go to college. I met my wife there 7 years ago and I can see my shoe in the "shoe tree" picture that we nailed to the tree after we got married 5 years ago. Awesome place!

Murray is the friendliest small town. Every one is so friendly and hospitable. I just moved in a year and a half ago and I already feel at home.

I grew up in Murray. People know each other and can call you by name. I attended college in Missouri and lived with my husband in other states but never ever found any place that shows love, progress and gives happiness as Murray, KY. It is the best small town of them all.I love this town.

For anyone that lives here--or anywhere near--Murray is a town where one can truly say, "I am proud to be from Murray." Not only is this a town where everyone meets and greets one another as they pass on the streets or drive by their house, but it is a caring town. Whenever individuals have trials and troubles, you will find an outpouring of support, concern, and prayers. Even those who are not native citizens (like me) will tell you "this is home" because there is none better. We are small in comparison to many cities, yet large enough to accommodate most all of your needs. We have great people from all walks of life, a beautiful town, and a great university. There may be a ontinuously looking for avenues to enhance our town; but it is top-notch as it is.
