Keokuk has a unique and interesting history. Named for the great Indian Chief who tried to stave off the destruction of his people by working towards cooperation with white settlers and government, instead of fighting a losing war with them. Our town is the only one in the country with this great name and it has popped up many times over the years in pop culture, including references in many films and on television, in song, art etc. Many famous names were either born here or lived here at one time or another. Great American's like Mark Twain and Howard Hughes. Although Keokuk has declined economically, we have a history of coming back against the odds to beat adversity and the people here have a positive outlook towards our future. Even though I moved away several years ago, Keokuk is and will always be my hometown and I will do what I can to help it succeed. When one considers all that we have to offer, our rich history, our scenic location along the mighty Mississippi river and our dedicated and friendly citizens, Keokuk is an overlooked gem that demands a closer look!

One of Iowa's most historic towns, situated where the Des Moines River meets the Mighty Mississippi River. Proud of our heritage and hopeful for our future.
