Description

Emporia, KS prides itself in founding Veterans Day, which they celebrate with a full week of festivities. Locals support the troops and celebrate America with events and fundraisers year round. Emporia is located between Kansas City and Wichita on Interstate 35.

Tour the All Veterans Memorial and Park, which honors all who have served our country in every branch of the military. The town also offers other memorials, the Lyon County Museum, the Schmidt Museum of Natural History, and the David Traylor Zoo. An aquatic center and 18 parks in Emporia will please the active traveler.

Emporia State University draws students from far and wide and provides a museum of its own and competitive athletics. Emporia’s also home to the National Teacher’s Hall of Fame and the William Allen White residence, a favorite place for visitors to stay.

Food is a highlight here, with many restaurants where the people are friendly and the owners are often hands-on, doing everything from bussing tables to manning the grill. Try the enchiladas at Casa Ramos, the giant sandwiches at Amanda’s Bakery and Café, the juicy and cheap burgers at J’s Burgers, or the mouthwatering ribs at Bobby D’s BBQ.

I lived my whole life in Emporia until last year, when I had to move for a teaching job. It truly saddens me as Emporia is a lovely place to live. As for patriotism, I think it's clear from other reviews that we are the founding city of Veteran's Day. How many other places close businesses and schools for one day in November to honor the veterans of ALL wars?

Number 1 patriotic town in the USA! Home of All Veteran's Day. Parades, USO shows, patriotic writing contests, All Veteran's Memorial Park, Purple Heart recognition/display. There are signs recognizing Emporia as the Home of Veteran's Day, at entrances to town. The Patriot Guard represents Emporia at funerals, of fallen heros. School children are given lessons in proper handling of the American flag, presented by military veterans. There are numerous displays of the American flag, year round, not just on holidays. There are American flags lining the entrance to the cemeteries, and many graves have military emblems, that hold flags on all the graves of veterans, in all of the cemeteries in Lyon county. I am proud to be from Emporia, KS. Emporia will continue to exhibit their patriotic pride in the USA!

Emporia is very patriotic! Emporia is the founding city of Veteran's Day. Our nation's veterans are honored annually with week long activities every November with Parades, USO shows, patriotic writing contests, patriotic art contests and displays, and Purple Heart recognition/display. But we don't just show our patriotism in November, it is shown all year long. The All Veteran's Memorial is open all year, American flags line our streets and fill our cemeteris, members of the community are always eager and willing to donate items and assemble care packages for our active duty troops and our Indepence Day celebration is getting better every year.

I grew up in Emporia and celebrate the fact, with so many other citizens of the city, that E-town in the birth place of Veteran's Day. Emporians are passionate about God and their country.
