Mount Airy, North Carolina

2013 Best Small Towns in America

Contest ends:  September 3, 2013

3 Votes - "Friendliest"

Mount Airy was the setting for Andy Griffith’s Mayberry and transports visitors to a happy, simpler time. The local Cinema hosts the second longest running live radio show in America and pieces of Mayberry have been preserved or reproduced.

A stroll down Main Street leads to friendly hello’s and street performances. The community frequently gathers in the local amphitheater for festivals and live music where everyone is welcome to dance. Mount Airy also offers a local museum, great restaurants like Trio or Thailand Café, and the Old North State winery.

Gone With the Wynn’s were greeted by Mount Airy’s mayor who was so confident in her town’s friendliness, she didn’t plan any events. The team was escorted around town in a vintage squad car and witnessed the camaraderie among neighbors everywhere. The Wynn’s said, “In a small town like this one you can never be in a hurry, too many people want to stop and chit-chat or shake your hand or even give you a hug...we got lots of hugs.”

Squad car tours are available for all visitors and will transport you back to simpler times. Mount Airy is also the home of George Snappenfield, the inventor of disc golf, and invites everyone to play a round while in town.

Very frendly people. The town is full of beautiful old buildings with plenty of history. You can spend all day just downtown with its shops of all kinds and the restaurants.

Any day of the week, you can walk down the street and a number of people will say hello, ask you where you're from. Strangers that show a real concern for you, People you have never met, treating you as their next door neighbor. The steets are lined with out of state cars, Why are they here. It's that good old back home feeling you get. Mount Airy brings you back to the better days were you can just sit on a bench and someone will start a conversation about any number of things. People are not afraid to speek to strangers. Yes folks, there is really a Mayberry and it is right here in Mount Airy NC
