Tupelo, Mississippi, is best-known as Elvis Presley's birthplace, and the small shotgun house where he was born still stands today, part of the impressive, 15-acre Elvis Presley Center, located on Elvis Presley Drive, of course. An Elvis chapel and park are part of the center, available for meditating on the legacy of the King of Rock and Roll. But Tupelo's past extends further back than the Elvis days, so before plunging into the King's history, start this Mississippi road trip just north of Elvis's birthplace, at MS 370 and US 45, site of Brices Cross Roads National Battlefield. Along with Tupelo National Battlefield, it's one of many spots commemorating Mississippi's Civil War history. As you head south back into downtown Tupelo, be sure to stop at the Natchez Trace Parkway Visitor Center; the popular scenic byway runs 444 miles from Natchez to Nashville. After spending time at the Elvis Presley Center in Tupelo, head west on MS 6 for an hour to Oxford, Mississippi, and visit the home of William Faulkner --- a literary king in his own right.
