As the birthplace of American archaeology and paleontology, South Dakota contains attractions that provide a much deeper view of history than the panorama of presidents carved into a cliffside by a 20th-century man. The geology of the northern plains has proven ideal for more than just the work of sculptors -- it has also been great for the preservation of remains, from dinosaurs to Ice Age creatures to prehistoric civilization. With exhibits that include not only mounted discoveries but also active dig sites, in one case welcoming hands-on participation, perhaps there's no better place to bone up on American prehistory.
