South Carolina has a rich and complex history. Spanish and English explorers competed to gain foothold for empire on the state's shores as long ago as the early 16th century. The state played a pivotal role in both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, and its much-romanticized plantation past has become part of the tapestry of American myth and history. The state's interior is known as the "Heartland" and the South Carolina Heartland History tour will give you an opportunity to explore the South Carolina interior and sample the state's historic charms. You'll visit two moderately sized towns during your weekend tour: Aiken near the southwest border, and Abbeville, about 30 miles northwest of Aiken along SC 28.
