For many, it was their first glimpse of the mighty wall of mountains that lay between them and the Pacific coast. The looming monolith called to pioneers in slow rolling wagon trains and to early motorists in their touring cars. Across the vast expanse of the western plains rang their immortal cry: "Pikes Peak or bust!" Zebulon Pike first spotted the peak in 1806. This beacon of western expansion still draws thousands of visitors every year. The view from the summit -- accessible by either car or train -- inspired the author of "America the Beautiful" to pen the famous lines celebrating the country's "spacious skies and amber waves of grain." Make the climb to the top, look back out over the plains. You'll find more than a weekend's worth of adventure, exploration and relaxation around the peak.
