While visiting Pennsylvania's Allegheny Forest, make sure to take side trips to see Gettysburg National Military Park and Independence National Historical Park, home of the Liberty Bell. Once you've absorbed these historical landmarks, continue toward the Allegheny Forest, Pennsylvania's only national forest. Designated a National Forest in 1923, the area has four beaches, six boat launches, 17 official campsites, and three scenic overlooks. With some 512,000 acres of habitat, there are more than 300 species of wildlife. Visit in the fall, when the leaves of the Hardwoods--including black cherry, yellow poplar, and red maple--turn to their autumn colors.
