No, it's not St. Petersburg. That's in Florida, on a big blue bay and with a wide, sandy beach. This is Petersburg, Virginia, on the Appomattox River, a little south of Richmond. It's not the sun you soak up here, but history and romance. The city, an important center for both commerce and transportation for over 300 years, suffered the loss of its original downtown to fire in 1815. Later, the town suffered under the longest siege of the American Civil War. Most recently, the new Old Town (built right after the fire and now almost 200 years old) was battered again when a tornado struck in 1993. The old brick structures now housing restaurants, boutiques, and antique shops were rebuilt one more time and are ripe for exploration and relaxation. If you're looking for traditional southern cuisine, Petersburg's most celebrated barbecue house is called King's; they're at 2910 S. Crater Road (804-732-0975).
