Ohio's Hocking Hills

An hour southeast of Columbus, Route 33 winds up and down along S-curves through the Hocking Hills, where ancient sandstone long ago eroded into a unique wooded landscape of hollows, gorges, and caves. Looping back is Route 56, another stretch so curvaceous that Ford Motor Company has used it as a test road. Along both routes you’ll find plenty of small town Americana; state park trails that pass waterfalls and recess caves; and historic inns and contemporary restaurants, where you can bunk in cozy cabins and feast on farm-to-table food---like a modern pioneer.

Worth Noting: Although this road trip starts south of Columbus, consider spending time there, perhaps following our Columbus Shopping & Sampling itinerary. The capital has an interesting mix of chic boutiques, sophisticated restaurants, and happening nightspots. This is especially true in the historic Short North arts and shopping district and in German Village.

Travel Tips:This trip takes you along Route 22 from Columbus to Logan, in the heart of the Hocking Hills, and on to Nelsonville. In both towns, you’ll find plenty of Americana, craftsmanship, and down-home food. The same is true of Lancaster. To reach it from Nelsonville on the return trip to Columbus, consider looping back through those glorious hills along routes like 180, 56—a stretch so curvaceous that Ford Motor Company has used it as a test road—and 159. The state parks have RV sites, but the hills here make it essential to check routing carefully.
