Virginia's pristine Northern Neck region presents a tranquil contrast to the nearby urban center of Washington, D.C. A good daytrip through this region, between the Potomac and the Rappahannock rivers to the Chesapeake Bay, begins at Fredericksburg. Fredericksburg, Virginia, brims with history. A must-see: Kenmore Plantation and Gardens, one of the state's finest 18th-century houses and the home of George Washington's sister. For a taste of the local arts scene, hit a First Friday exhibit opening event at LibertyTown Arts Workshop in downtown Fredericksburg. Next, head southeast on VA 3 to one of the state's oldest and largest wineries, Ingleside Plantation Vineyards & Winery in Oak Grove, Virginia. On the other side of the highway is the George Washington Birthplace National Monument. Continue on to Stratford, Virginia, where you can tour the mansion and 1,600-acre operating farm at Stratford Hall Plantation, the birthplace of Robert E. Lee. Catch a great view of the Potomac River from the high bluffs here or at the neighboring Westmoreland State Park.
