Sitting on the banks of the Ocmulgee River, the city of Macon, Georgia, is home to beautiful historic houses, the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, and other museums and heritage sites of interest to the whole family. Your Macon, Georgia, road trip begins just east of downtown at Ocmulgee National Monument & Indian Mounds, off I-16, an area that preserves 12,000-year-old archeological remains on hundreds of acres. Go west across the Ocmulgee River to see downtown Macon's sites, including Hay House, Cannonball House and Museum, and Sidney Lanier Cottage, three historic homes preserved for visitors. The Georgia Sports Hall of Fame and Georgia Music Hall of Fame honor the many Georgians who've had an impact on the worlds of athletics and music, including Hank Aaron and Ray Charles. For some famous Macon barbecue, go south of downtown to Fincher's Barbecue and enjoy the curbside service.
