Description

Sculpted by fire and ice, this region of California's eastern Sierra Nevada is blessed by some of the most outstanding skiing and scenery in the state. Although there is no specific "Mammoth Lake" (the name refers to the town, not to the surrounding bodies of water), Ice Age glaciers carved a host of jewel-like Alpine lakes in the mountains that rim the Long Valley caldera, where volcanic activity still simmers fairly close to the surface. Accessible by local roads, Twin Lakes, Lake Mary, Lake George, Lake Mamie, Convict Lake, and Horseshoe Lake set the scene for unparalleled hiking and fishing experiences. Horseshoe Lake is open for swimming, as well. Two of California's most popular ski areas lie close by the town of Mammoth Lakes, and history buffs can explore local ghost towns to their hearts' content. In fact, Bodie, one of the best-preserved mining towns of its era, is less than 50 miles away. Volcanic activity has taken a hand in shaping the face of the region, as nearby Mono Lake Tufa State Reserve and Devil's Postpile National Monument attest. Mammoth Lakes also makes a convenient base of operations for exploring the eastern portions of Yosemite National Park, whose borders lie an hour's drive away.
