Description

The Sunflower State devotes 96 percent of its land to farming, though some time ago the state was considered too arid to contribute agriculturally. Along the tour, stop at the Santa Fe Trail Center in Larned. The trail, running from Missouri to New Mexico, once served as means of transportation in the 19th century. South of Larned, check out Dodge City. In the late 1800s, Dodge City was branded a city of lawlessness and gun-slinging. Shootings all over the town left men dead with their boots on, therefore creating the Boot Hill Cemetery where the men were buried. Bring your Kansas experience to a close in Scott City at Lake Scott State Park. Here, find the ruins of El Cuartelejo, the only known Indian pueblo in Kansas. Established in the 1600s by Taos Indians and later occupied by Picuris Indians, both groups were attracted to the land by many large springs.
