Description

Volcanoes are explosive natural wonders. Molten rock from Earth's inner layers spills onto the surface, altering the landscape, sometimes with dazzling fury and resounding power. While getting close enough to watch one of these spectacular displays is all but impossible, viewing the effects of nature's force can be just as awe-inspiring. Central and southeastern Idaho bubble over with craters, caves, and hot springs, reminders of Earth's potential for sustained creativity as well as sudden destruction. Take a trip to Shoshone Ice Cave, a natural year-round refrigerator that never escalates beyond 30 degrees Fahrenheit because of an extinct volcano and an underground glacier. Continue north to Craters of the Moon National Monument to experience the result of volcanic eruptions that lasted from 15,000 years ago to 2,000 years ago. The landscape is scarred with craters, cinder cones, and lava tubes. At the end of the day, a dinner theater experience brings the drama indoors.
