There's no place better to learn about forest firefighting past and present than in Missoula, Montana. When forest fires rage across the northwestern United States, smokejumpers go into action. To reach remote fires, smokejumpers parachute into roadless areas; then equipment is dropped to the site. Smoke jumping wasn't always the Northwest's standard firefighting technique. For a glimpse of how fires were fought in the early 20th century, stroll back into yesteryear, before airplanes replaced mules as the firefighter's transport of choice.
