Description

It's a narrow peninsula thrusting thumb-like into Lake Michigan, and separating Green Bay from the vastness of the lake. It has small towns with colorful names like Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, and Sturgeon Bay. It's rustic and peaceful here, a place to slow down, relax, and forget the city. A place to sit gazing out over the waters, look at the lighthouses and the maritime museum, and, in the evenings, take in a show or a concert being put on in a barn. Door County is a natural setting for warm feelings and artistic expression. You'll find the studios of painters, weavers, and potters here, drawn by the rocky peninsula's natural beauty. If it seems like not much goes on, perhaps that's the idea. This is a place to forget the hurly-burly world. You'll find no lack of places to stay. Choices range from traditional resorts with golf courses and swimming pools such as Alpine Resort (920-868-3000) and High Point Inn (800-595-6894) to bed and breakfasts like Scofield House (888-463-0204), Colonial Gardens (920-746-9192), and Whitefish Bay Farm (920-743-1560).When dinner time rolls around, look for Door County's unique culinary treat -- the fish boil. The dramatic preparations with outdoor kettle and sudden flashes of fire are a show in themselves. Fish boils are given all over the area by church and community groups. Don't be shy; pull up a plate and dig in. If you prefer the commercial variety, try the Viking Grill at 12029 Highway 42 in Ellison Bay (920-854-2998).
