There’s a lot going on in Columbus. And it’s not just Ohio’s legislature and its Big 10 state university that contribute to the energy and buzz. As headquarters of the L Brands---whose family includes The Limited, Victoria’s Secret, and Bath & Body Works stores---Columbus is also very fashion forward. Here, contemporary creativity blends with an immigrant legacy of roll-up-your-sleeves entrepreneurship. A location in the middle of a state known for its farms also makes the nation’s 15th largest city a great place for field-to-fork dining. With a couple exceptions, this itinerary focuses on two districts, both featuring historic brick buildings made of the rich red Ohio clay that gives Columbus its distinctive color and character.
Once a rundown area “just north and short of” downtown, the revitalized Short North Arts District (www.shortnorth.org), is today known for its eclectic collection of galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and nightspots. It runs along North High Street between King Avenue to the north and Nationwide Boulevard. To the south of downtown is German Village (www.gvbusinesscommunity.com), with its narrow brick streets and cozy 19th-century brick houses built by German immigrants, many of whom once worked in the nearby Brewery District, and today housing interesting shops and restaurants as well as a few fragrant bakeries.
Travel Tips: Explorations of the Short North and German Village districts and the sights near them could each fill up a day. Although both districts are very walkable---and are technically within walking distance of downtown---the distance between the points of interest on this trip covers roughly 18 miles. So, you’re better off taking public transit or driving and parking to explore the northernmost sights. Ditto with a visit (best done as a day trip) to the Columbus Zoo, which adds another 10 miles or so to the trip north and west of town. You can also head south, following our Ohio’s Hocking Hills road trip.
