Whitman's Bakery

Whitman's is a Waynesville institution. Situated among the galleries and boutiques on the town's handsome, brick-facaded Main Street, this old-fashioned bakery celebrated its 60th birthday in 2005. Arrayed in the two large display cases are danishes, doughnuts, napoleons, apple turnovers, ├ęclairs, cakes, and "fried pies'" also sells homemade breads such as Swedish rye, sprouted wheat, and pumpernickel-sunflower-raisin. Unlike many of today's bakeries, Whitman's makes everything on the premises. Whitman's adjoining sandwich shop offers sit-down dining and a menu with more than a dozen hot and cold sandwiches. Old black-and-white photos of Waynesville hang from the exposed-brick walls. A roofed outdoor deck enjoys a panoramic view of the nearby Great Smoky Mountains.
