Venetian Pool

One of the most picturesque and refreshing places in the Miami area is smack dab in the middle of a residential district. In the 1920s, when George Merrick was designing the planned community of Coral Gables, he enlisted his uncle, Denman Fink, to do something creative with an empty rock quarry.

Fink came up with a community swimming pool with a twist: it would incorporate a Venetian scenescape with gondolas and waterfalls amid a lush tropical landscape. Nearly 100 years after its premiere, the freshwater 820,000-gallon Venetian Pool is still making a splash. Amazingly, the pool is emptied and refilled each night from the aquifer below. Lockers, concessions, showers, and vintage photos round out this shaded, quiet retreat.
