USS LST Ship Memorial, Inc.

The USS LST 325 is the last fully operational LST in the United States and was a part of the invasion of Omaha Beach in Normandy on June 6th, 1944 for D-Day. LST stands for Landing Ship Tank. They were the largest of the WWII vessels designed to deliver cargo directly onto the beach. They were designed to do what no other ship was ever designed to do, beach itself on a hostile shore, unload cargo directly on the beach and then retract off the beach under its own power. Without these tough, rough-riding, plodding fighting ships; Allied victory in the Atlantic and Pacific would have been much more difficult and bloody. LST’s were also used in the Korean and Vietnam Wars for their adaptability of design and the flat bottom was key in navigating shallow rivers and inlets. Guided tours of the ship are available Monday-Saturday 10a.m. to 4p.m. and Sunday 12p.m. to 4p.m. from April 14th to November 14th and closed on Mondays during the winter.
