Thumb Area Bottomland Preserve

Description

Lake Huron's Thumb Area Bottomland Preserve, which covers about 276 square miles of lake bottom, is the resting place of 19 major shipwrecks. Freighter John McGean lies upside down here. Littering the area are giant grindstones off the shore of Grindstone City. The massive stones were once made here. Scuba divers explore wrecks at Sanilac Shores Underwater Preserve on the Thumb's east coast.
