The Vinoy Renaissance

From the Roaring ’20s to the 1960s, this was the Gulf Coast accommodation of choice for celebrities, politicians, and socialites. Following a descent into near oblivion, a $93-million renovation in the 1990s included a restoration of the hand-painted frescoes on the dining room’s cypress ceilings. Indeed, the Vinoy is so meticulously well-preserved that you can even take a historical tour of it.

You can’t beat the location, either, which overlooks a marina and a cultural district that includes Straub Park, the shops and restaurants of Beach Drive, and two museums: Museum of Fine Arts and Museum of History. Amenities include two pools, a fitness center, a spa, tennis courts, and a golf course.
