The Forks and Lower Fort Garry

The Forks in Winnipeg have been the Aboriginal peoples' meeting place for thousands of years. The location is where the Assiniboine and Red Rivers meet, and is where Upper Fort Garry was built as the administrative centre for the Hudson's Bay Company. The original fort was destroyed in a flood in 1826 and was rebuilt as Lower Fort Garry down river on higher ground. A third attempt was necessary when the people wouldn't travel so far to work from The Forks where they lived.
