The Brown Hotel

Opened in 1923, this 16-story, 293-room property is a downtown classic, one that’s also on the National Register of Historic Places. Restoration work in the 1980s brought the property back to its original English Renaissance style. Rooms have a sophisticated mix of patterns and color schemes. Beds have Egyptian cotton sheets and European white-down comforters. Free Wi-Fi and shuttle service are givens here—unusual perks for a luxury hotel. Locals and visitors consider the on-site English Grill to be one of the city’s best restaurants. It’s also the place to try a hot brown, a Kentucky specialty sandwich that originated in this hotel back in 1926.
