Taughannock Falls State Park

Here, hikes along gorge and rim trails afford spectacular views of Taughannock Falls, which are taller than those at Niagara. Over time, what is one of the highest waterfalls east of the Rockies penetrated layers of sandstone, shale, and limestone (the bed of an ancient sea), carving out a 400-foot-deep gorge. Cabins (reservations required) and tent and RV sites overlook Cayuga Lake, which has a swimming beach, fishing areas, and a marina and boat-launch sites.
