St. Michael's Cathedral

Description

St. Michael's Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel, was built between 1840 and 1848, when Sitka was the capital of Russian America. The original building burned in 1966, but most of the exquisite Russian Orthodox religious art was saved and moved to the new cathedral. Built in accordance with historically accurate drawings of the original, it is considered a very close replica.
