Shoshone Ice Caves

Description

Even when summer brings temperatures of over 100 degrees, the thermometer in these south-central Idaho caves—17 miles north of Shoshone—consistently registers between 18 and 28 degrees. Freezing air currents inside a lava tube created these remarkable formations some 90 feet down. Layer up and sport sturdy shoes for the daily, 45-minute, guided tours (you can’t explore on your own). The on-site museum has gems, minerals, and Native American artifacts.
