San Diego Air & Space Museum

Description

The museum houses full-scale mock-ups of Gemini and Mercury spacecraft as well as the command module from the Apollo IX mission. There are nearly 70 flying machines, including replicas of Wright gliders from 1901 and 1902, a Messerschmidt mock-up, and a Lockheed A-12 Blackbird. For an extra fee, you can test flight simulators that surround you with a widescreen view outside your “jet” or let you feel the effects of 36-degree pitch, roll, spin, and spiral.

The museum is in Balboa Park, San Diego’s largest public area, where attractions also include the Museum of Man and the San Diego Museum of Art, the internationally acclaimed Old Globe Theater, a carousel, gardens, restaurants, play areas, and trails. Plan a day to explore the park with a Museum Pass, which grants entry into many of the city’s cultural arenas.
