Riverside, Future Birthplace of Captain Kirk

What makes people go mad for Star Trek? It's anyone's guess, but the townsfolk of Riverside (population less than 1,000) gladly play host to Trek Fest, when thousands of "Trekkies" gather here every year on the last weekend in June to geek out on their idol Captain Kirk, who in one episode of the late-'60s sci-fi TV show alluded to his birth here in the year 2233. A concrete marker on a downtown street denotes his future birthplace, a plaque at Murphy's Bar and Grill commemorates his future conception, and giant imitation of the USS Enterprise (rechristened "Riverside" to avoid legal hassles with Paramount) dominates Main Street downtown. Nearby businesses borrow Star Trek themes, and locals love to indulge visitors with fictitious but convincing stories about Kirk's ancestors. Riverside is off of Highway 218 on Highway 22, about one mile west of 218.
