Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge


Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge: Sweeping Natural Terrain An outstanding early refuge (1937), Pea Island is National Register-eligible. Established for migrating birds, the refuge seasonally hosts 365 bird species. The Byway flows through the refuge’s 13 wild miles. Wings Over Water, “take a walk on the wild side,” is a major fall event. Visitor center open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily in summer, off-season Thursday-Sunday (closed 12/25). Refuge closed at dark. A permit for nighttime recreational surf fishing is available.
