Pacific Biological Laboratories

Description

This former research facility was owned by Edward Flanders Rob Ricketts, the marine biologist and ecological visionary who was a good friend of John Steinbeck and the basis for the character of “Doc” in the novel Cannery Row. On free tours of the historical site, offered by the city, you’ll learn more about Doc’s studies of both the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez as well as his relationship with Steinbeck and the ties that the lab has to---of all things---the Monterey Jazz Festival.
