Oakland Museum of California

Description

Opened in 1969, this modernist open-air structure houses California's only museum exclusively focused on the state's history, art, and natural sciences. Each subject merits a separate level of the building. Don't miss the impressive ecology diorama that simulates a walk through California's various natural habitats, from the Pacific Ocean to the high Sierra Nevada mountains in the east. Have a look at the extensive collection of California artifacts such as the guitar played at Woodstock by Berkeley native Country Joe McDonald, a 19th century California mud wagon, and the Dream on Wheels diorama with its 1950s shiny red car, drive-in restaurant sign, and jukebox. Take in the view from the rooftop garden atop the museum, then have lunch in the museum cafe, enjoy a picnic in the courtyard gardens, or visit the museum store.
