Moses Cone Manor House

Description

Along with his brother, Caesar, Moses Cone established one of North Carolina’s largest textile empires in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He and his wife, Bertha, used some of their wealth to create this country estate. In 1949, the Colonial Revival–style Flat Top Manor and its surrounding 3,500 acres were given to the federal government to be operated as a “public park and pleasuring ground.”

In summer and fall, staffers offer tours of the 23-room mansion, short talks on the porch, and guided walks to the Cone Cemetery. While you’re here, visit the Parkway Craft Center, which sells art, photography, pottery, glass items, woodworks, jewelry, quilts, and more created by members of the Southern Highland Craft Guild.
