Monterey State Historic Park

Description

This park preserves Monterey’s historic Mexican- and Victorian-inspired adobe houses and gardens. Call to book a guided tour, or grab a “Path of History” map at the Stanton Center and follow sidewalk markers. Don’t miss the Custom House, California’s oldest government building, or Colton Hall, home to the state’s first constitution. Other notable stops include the pink Larkin House; the Presidio of Monterey Museum; and the Stevenson House, a tribute to Robert Louis Stevenson who, unknown and near death, stayed here in 1879. Fame—and improved health—followed, and his life and work are remembered here.
