Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village

Description

Occupied more than a thousand years ago, this buried community has only begun to yield the secrets of its inhabitants' ways of life: a diverse diet from agriculture, hunting, gathering, and fishing; the use of thousands of dogs both as beasts of burden and livestock for food; the housing of its population of 1,000 in 80 earthen lodges; and much more. More than 1.5 million artifacts have been excavated from small portions of the 22-acre site, many of which are displayed in an onsite museum. The Thomsen Center Archeodome, a combination laboratory and visitors center, straddles an active dig site and allows guests to view finds from the uncovered strata below. To get to Indian Village Road, take Highway 37 north from I-90 and follow the signs.
