Mel Fisher Maritime Museum

Mel Fisher spent decades searching for treasure-laden Spanish galleons sunk by hurricanes in the Florida Straits. In 1985, he hit the mother lode when he found the circa 1622 wrecks of the Santa Margarita and Nuestra Senora de Atocha—the Atocha carried $450 million in gold, silver, and emeralds. Much of what Fisher didn’t cash in on (to cover expenses and investors and to finance a comfortable lifestyle) is on display here, including a 6-pound gold bar and a 77-carat uncut emerald.
