Mabry Mill Restaurant
This complex offers so much more than just a place to eat. It also offers a glimpse at life in the early 20th century, with a gristmill, sawmill, blacksmith shop (complete with a working smithy), and the Matthews Cabin. Costumed interpreters conduct craft demonstrations; visit on weekends in late September and October, and you’ll see them churning out apple butter. Sunday afternoon concerts of traditional Appalachian music are another highlight.
A gift shop features Virginia crafts and foods as well as mill- and BRP-inspired clothing, books, music, and souvenirs. You can also get grits, cornmeal, and buckwheat flour made at the on-site mill, which was built circa 1908 by Ed Mabry. The restaurant’s country-style menu features barbecue pulled pork, chicken pot pie, creamed corn, and blackberry cobbler. Another plus? Breakfast is served all day. Be sure to try one of the pancake choices ranging from cornmeal and buckwheat to blueberry and apple.
