Linn Cove Viaduct

Description

Due to an environmentally sensitive 7-mile section that defied cut-and-fill road construction, for years the BRP was left unfinished. Eventually environmentalists, landowners, engineers, and architects put their skills together to skirt the rugged slopes of Grandfather Mountain. The solution was a 1,243-foot-long bridge consisting of 153 50-ton segments. Since its completion in 1987, the viaduct has received 11 design awards. Scientists also continue to study the unique ecology of this mountain habitat, currently home to dozens of globally endangered plant and animal species.
