Lincoln Park Zoo

Description

One of the last free zoos in the country, Lincoln Park Zoo is home to more than 1,600 animals. With the magnificent Chicago skyline as a backdrop, visitors can watch river otters frolicking, lions prowling, and pink flamingos preening their feathers. Started in 1868 when Chicago's Lincoln Park Commissioners received a pair of swans as a gift from New York's Central Park Commissioners, the zoo's first purchase, a bear cub for $10, was in 1874. Its premier exhibits now include the Kovler Lion House, for endangered big cats; spectacled, polar and Malaysian sun bears in seven outdoor habitats; the Helen Brach Primate House; and a bird house with a tropical rain forest habitat. Regenstein African Journey, a naturalistic immersion exhibit that recreates the forests and savannas of Africa, features old favorites such as elephants, giraffes, rhinos and hippos, along with exciting new arrivals, including slender-snouted crocodiles, African wild dogs, and Madagascar hissing cockroaches. The Regenstein Center for African Apes is an indoor/outdoor facility with waterfalls, trees, vines, and animal-activated devices, all designed to encourage the gorillas and chimpanzees to move about. Kids will love the Children's Zoo, with its hedgehogs, guinea pigs, owls, lizards, and even a tarantula. The zoo offers many teacher and faculty workshops (the zoo is a leader in field conservation), classes, after-school programs and internships as well as programs for families. In addition, there are also year-round events for all ages including a book club, bird walks, and after-hours parties. Memberships, trips and animal adoption programs are also available.
