Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area


Lake McConaughy, Nebraska's largest reservoir at 35,700 acres, is surrounded by white sandy beaches and cottonwood trees. As the largest lake in Nebraska, it's ideal for scuba diving, parasailing, wind surfing, and walleye fishing. No lifeguards are on duty at any time; high season lasts from Memorial Day to Labor Day. There are no established hiking trails, but visitors are free to explore throughout the entire park. Choose a spot on one of two campgrounds. There are numerous non-designated campsites. Private vendors around the lake offer cabins, camping, boat rentals, groceries, dining, etc. Seasonal hunting is permitted. Horse owners are welcome to bring their horses. Call the superintendent for information. Located nine miles north of Ogallala on Hwy 61. Pets: Leashed pets are permitted. Restrictions and fees: Nebraska state parks charge a nominal daily entrance fee per vehicle. An alcohol ban is enforced in all Nebraska state parks and campgrounds.
