La Posta de Mesilla

This compound once housed all the goods and services a traveler would need at a stop along the Butterfield Stagecoach line between St. Louis, MO, and San Francisco, CA. That was back in the 1850s. Since 1939, the Territorial-style adobe structures in Old Mesilla have housed the dining rooms of La Posta restaurant.

The guacamole, steak, and tostadas compuestas (toasted corn tortilla cup filled with frijoles, red chile con carne, lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese) are house specialties. For dessert, try the sopaipillas, light pastry puffs served with warm honey for drizzling. The cantina has 100 or so tequilas, and the lobby features a small, exotic aviary.
