Ijams Nature Center

Description

Only a five-minute drive from downtown Knoxville, this nature preserve was established in 1976 following the purchase of a 20-acre parcel that had been in the family of Harry and Alice Ijams since 1910. It has since expanded to encompass 150 acres along the Tennessee River. Six miles of hiking and nature trails wind through Ijam's hilly woodlands and meadows, and a boardwalk takes visitors right along the river's edge for excellent wildlife viewing. The park's varied fauna includes herons, hawks, salamanders, snakes, weasels, and deer. The visitors center offers displays and exhibits about the park and its inhabitants as well as various educational programs. For more information, visit www.ijams.org.
