Hempstead County Courthouse

Washington is both a town and a state park. Established in 1824, it once welcomed travelers on the rugged Southwest Trail to Texas, and for a while it served as the capital of the Confederacy. Historic Washington State Park has been restored and recreated to offer insights into a 19th-century community and a glimpse into the territorial, antebellum, Civil War, and Reconstruction eras. Historic Washington State Park's visitor's center is housed in the 1874 Hempstead County Courthouse, where you'll find information on park tours, programs, and a gift shop.
