Goodspeed Opera House
William Goodspeed loved theater enough to spend some of his banking and shipping fortune building this opera house. When completed in 1876, the Victorian confection, the tallest wooden structure on the Connecticut River, not only had a theater but also a steamboat terminal. Today, the season runs from mid-April through late-November with three productions of classics like Bye Bye Birdie or Anything Goes. If you can’t get tickets (or musical theater isn’t your thing), stop by for one of the hour-long, guided, backstage tours held every Saturday from 11 to 1 June through October.
