General Mansfield House

Middletown, home of Wesleyan University, owes its name and its prosperity to a location on the Connecticut River, midway between Hartford and Old Saybrook. It was first settled in 1650 and, by the 1700s, was one of the state’s wealthiest communities. It was also known for its Danforth pewter items. This history is documented through art, photographs, decorative arts, and textiles inside the General Mansfield House, one of the town’s oldest buildings. Ask about the Middletown Heritage Trail, a walking tour with 20 historical sites.
