Garden of the Gods

Description

Laced with trails crossing rocks estimated to be 320 million years old, the Garden of the Gods is a wonderland for hikers seeking wilderness recreation in Shawnee National Forest. Where there was once an inland sea, geologic uplift, and erosion have created a landscape of steep cliffs and sculpted sandstone. Backpackers can enjoy 5.5 miles of hiking trails in addition to the River to River Trail that traverses the area. A quarter-mile-long Observation Trail is available for visitors looking for a shorter excursion. Sandstone formations with names like Camel Rock and the Devil's Smokestack are just a short walk from the parking area. Year-round facilities include a picnic area and a campground with grills, drinking water, and toilets. The picnic area and Observation Trail are open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Leashed pets are permitted.
