Fort William Henry

Description

After the 1755 Battle of Lake George, the British had decided to consolidate their position at the south end of Lake George by constructing a fort to protect the terminus of the new wagon road between Lake George and Fort Edward and to provide a base of operations from which to launch raids north into the Champlain Valley. In two short months, under the watchful eye of military engineer Captain William Eyre, an imposing earth-and-timber fort was erected.
