First Awakenings

Lauded by locals and close to the National Steinbeck Center, this homey place is a great choice for breakfast or---if you couldn’t get a reservation at the Steinbeck House---for lunch. No surprise that the staff takes pride in making pancakes from scratch and always using the freshest possible ingredients.

In addition to dozens of egg, crepe, and pancake or French toast dishes, the breakfast menu features such classics as chicken-fried steak with country gravy or home-made corned-beef hash. Lunch also has the classics, from burgers to Cobb salads to Reubens on rye.
